Winger signs 18-month contract to leave Derby

Southend have made their second signing of the January transfer window by snapping up Derby winger David Martin, subject to him passing a medical. Skysports.com revealed earlier on Wednesday that Martin was set to move to Roots Hall after falling out of favour at Derby. Having already added striker Elliott Benyon to his squad, Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock has now swooped for Martin as he looks to revitalise their League Two promotion bid after just one win in their last five league matches. The 26-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Pride Park since joining the club on a permanent basis from Millwall in 2010 following a loan spell. He made just two substitute appearances in the Championship last season and has not figured in Nigel Clough's first team during the current campaign. Martin made five appearances on loan at Walsall in the autumn after undertaking a stint on loan at Notts County in the second half of last term. He has signed an 18-month contract at Roots Hall and will be available for the weekend's League Two game with Port Vale assuming he comes through his medical, which is scheduled for Thursday.
