Wigan have appealed the red card shown to Conor Sammon during their 5-0 defeat at Manchester United on Boxing Day.

Striker hoping to avoid ban for Old Trafford dismissal

Wigan have appealed the red card shown to Conor Sammon during their 5-0 defeat at Manchester United on Boxing Day. The Latics striker was shown a straight red card following a coming together with Michael Carrick at Old Trafford. He did raise his arm, catching the Red Devils midfielder, but there was no intent on his part and his dismissal appeared harsh. Wigan feel that is the case, with manager Roberto Martinez quick to question the decision in the wake of the Old Trafford encounter.

Wrong call

The Latics hope to hear the outcome of their appeal by Friday at the latest, allowing them to piece together their plans for Saturday's clash at Stoke. Should Sammon be let off the hook, he would come back into contention for a trip to the Britannia Stadium. Martinez said: "Conor Sammon did nothing wrong. You need to accept punishment when you do something wrong but this is a normal phase of play. "The red card is the wrong call. It would be very difficult to see Conor missing for three games but we'll have to wait and see."
