Notts County manager Craig Short says he is grateful star man Ben Davies is still at the club.
Davies' future was in doubt during the summer transfer window, with Championship side Derby believed to be keen on the midfielder's services.
Short rejected an initial offer from the Rams for the 29-year-old but did not come back in before last Tuesday's deadline.
And the Magpies boss was relieved to have clung onto the highly-rated former Shrewsbury player.
Short told the
Nottingham Post: "I'm so pleased to keep Ben. He is such an important part of the team.
"We had a replacement in mind if he went, but I'm glad it didn't come to that.
"I'm glad they didn't come back with an improved offer for him.
"Ben still being here is the best thing that could have happened."
Short was able to boost his ranks ahead of the close of the window by bringing in Premier League quality in the form of Blackburn striker Alan Judge.
Judge, 21, will stay at Meadow Lane on-loan until January as Short utilised his contacts from six years playing for the Lancashire outfit.
Short said of his move for Judge: "I've known about him for a while because of my links with Blackburn.
"I've spoken to a couple of the Blackburn players, Ryan Nelson and David Dunn, about Alan, and they spoke very highly of him.
"He was training with their first team squad during pre-season and did very well.
"I asked Blackburn if they were going to loan him out to let him come here, and I'm so glad they did us a favour because Scunthorpe United made an enquiry about him."
