Adam Legzdins is set to leave Crewe Alexandra after the goalkeeper rejected the offer of a new one-year contract.
Crewe had offered Legzdins the chance to stay at Gresty Road, but the keeper has decided to move on in search of greater first-team opportunities.
With Steve Phillips set to miss the start of next season due to a shoulder injury, Crewe boss Dario Gradi is surprised Legzdins has turned down the deal.
Gradi told the club's official website: "I was a little surprised that Adam decided not to accept our offer of a new contract, but he wants first-team football somewhere so credit to him.
"I was surprised because with Steve's injury, he would have started the season in the team and would have had a chance to stake his claim.
"I am not sure if he will get more money elsewhere, but he is after regular football and I respect that.
"We are now looking for a young goalkeeper and an option would be to borrow one if needs be from one of the bigger clubs. I have done that in the past and would entertain the idea again."
