Southend United have entered the race to win Motherwell defender Steven Hammell's signature, and are in talks with the player.
The 24-year-old left back has played his entire career at Fir Park, but wants a new challenge across the border.
Aberdeen, Derby County and Coventry City have all been linked with a move and Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood has said he was confident of reaching an agreement.
But Shrimpers manager Steve Tilson has now confirmed negotiations are taking place with his club, and United have now become the favourites to land the player.
"Hopefully he'll sign a contract," Tilson commented.
Hammell rejected a new deal at Motherwell after making more than 240 Scottish Premier League appearances for the club.
He would be an ideal capture for the Roots Hall outfit as they look to establish themselves in The Championship in the coming season.
