Preston pay the penalty

Preston North End conceded a late penalty to draw 1-1 at Derby County.

Preston North End missed the chance to move into the play-off places after a 1-1 draw at Derby County.

The result takes Preston's unbeaten run to 12 matches, but Billy Davies's side will be aggrieved they did not claim all three points at Pride Park.

The visitors had the most of the early chances - with Youl Mawene, David Nugent, David Jones, Lewis Neal and Adam Nowland all having efforts.

Preston goalkeeper Carlo Nash, meanwhile, was tested by the efforts of Derby's Adam Bolder, Inigo Idiakez, Tommy Smith and Marcus Tudgay before the break.

Nine minutes after half time, Preston took a deserved lead when Claude Davis (pictured) knocked home Chris Sedgwick's cross.

The goal forced The Rams to press for an equaliser and with nine minutes left, their persistence paid off as Davis was adjudged to have handled the ball in the Preston box.

Smith stepped up to score his 50th career goal from the spot and earn Derby an unlikely point.
