Rams near to John deal

Derby County are close to tying up a three-month loan deal for Stern John.

Derby County are close to tying up a three-month loan deal for Stern John, after completing the signing of Peter Whittingham for the same period.

Whittingham has joined The Rams on a three-month stint from Aston Villa and was at Pride Park for Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Coventry City.

It was initially thought the young midfielder would be with Derby for just a month but he will now stay until December.

Fellow loan signing Khalilou Fadiga played in the stalemate as Rams boss Phil Brown homes in on his third temporary capture of the week.

Brown has agreed terms with Coventry for experienced striker John to swap Championship clubs.

John has passed a medical at Pride Park and Brown is merely waiting for the paperwork to be completed.

"Stern will provide a more experienced focal point to the attack because he's an experienced hold-it-up type of player with a good goalscoring record," sad Brown.

"He's had rigorous medical checks over the last two days and the deal is as close to being done as is possible without signing the papers."
