The Rams sit perilously close to the foot of the table - second from bottom - and they are running out of games to save themselves.
Gregory is keen to keep highly-rated defensive duo Chris Riggott and Danny Higginbotham, despite interest from a number of clubs.
The central defensive partners have impressed together in a struggling Derby side and Gregory accepts he will probably lose them if they do fall into the First Division.
Riggott has been linked with a possible move to Liverpool for some time, with The Reds long-term admirers of the England Under-21 international.
Higginbotham has established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in the country after joining from Manchester United after failing to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford.
"Whatever the outcome of this season, it will be difficult to keep these two," admitted Gregory.
"Chris and Danny are good players who make an excellent blend. Despite their youth, they complement each other well.
"They kept Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen quiet last Saturday and also did the same recently to van Nistelrooy and Solskjaer plus Henry and Bergkamp."
With Derby still in somewhat financial trouble relegation to the Nationwide will mean that the club will have to cut back on some of its finances and those pair could be the first to be sacrificed along with striker Malcolm Christie.
