SMITH BUSY IN THE MARKET

DERBY COUNTY have been forwarded as the Premiership club who failed in a bid to sign Espanyol forward Oscar, while Daniele Daino is due at Pride Park for talks.

The Catalan ace attracted attention from Gianluca Vialli's First Division Watford this week, prompting sources in Spain to claim that another English side had previously tried to tempt the former Barcelona man to The Premiership.

It is now believed that Rams boss Jim Smith was keen on Oscar, but the East Midlanders will need to look elsewhere for players to provide the ammunition for Fabrizio Ravanelli.

Stefano Eranio is expected to complete a surprise return to Pride Park, after saying his farewells at the end of last term, and another Italian, Matteo Boranga also interests Smith.

Milan's Daino, long touted by planetfootball.com as a Rams target, is due to arrive in England in order to discuss terms with County officials.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder only made one appearance last term and is available to move out on loan after recently agreeing a new contract at Giuseppe Meazza.

There is the possibility that Smith could announce a triple Italian swoop with Eranio, Boranga and Daino all arriving in order to bolster the Pride Park club's squad.
