Young striker Malcolm Christie was the undisputed star of the show as he made the opener for Georgi Kinkladze and then added a second himself, before a late onslaught completely sank the visitors.
Georgian genius Kinkladze latched onto Christie`s lay-off to curl a left-footed shot past Neil Sullivan, for his first goal since his return to England from Ajax.
Sullivan will be disappointed that he did not keep it out, particularly in the wake of his impressive performance against Manchester United last weekend.
Christie, 20, capitalised on some slack defending on 71 minutes to help seal a crucial win for The Rams as he swivelled inside the box to beat Sullivan.
Egil Olsen`s side tried in vain to get back into the game but Andreas Lund`s header was one of few attempts to trouble the home side.
A third goal was provided by substitute Deon Burton, who replaced Christie, with a fine header into the far corner of the net, after 85 minutes.
Moments later, Stefan Schnoor`s fine run allowed another substitute, Dean Sturridge, to claim his 50th league goal as the visitors capitulated in the closing stages.
Derby are now only one point behind the South Londoners and both will continue to look nervously over their shoulders at the bottom three.
Egil Olsen labelled the Dons` performance in the last half hour as "awful" and the worst they have played under his managership.
"It is more to do with discipline and attitude than tactics," he said. "We have to do something about it."
