Beth Mead scored a stunning stoppage-time winner as Sunderland leapfrogged opponents Notts County in the Women’s Super League with a 2-1 victory.

Sunderland began well, taking the lead after two minutes when defender Hayley Sharp latched on to Victoria Greenwell’s free-kick at the back post to head past on-loan Arsenal and England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain.

The Magpies drew level on 17 minutes though, Jess Clarke firing home from 12 yards after Leanne Crichton slipped the ball through to him.

Mead almost put Sunderland back in the lead eight minutes into the second half but her touch was too heavy, allowing Chamberlain to close her down.

County almost claimed the winner themselves a minute from time as Ellen White broke the offside trap but new Sunderland signing Hilde Gunn Olsen made a superb one-on-one save to deny the England international.

That miss was to prove costly as Mead got on the end of an Abbey Joice pass in the penalty area and fired past Chamberlain with a powerful right-footed shot.
