Adam Johnson says Newcastle's St James' Park is a "personal favourite" venue after his latest winner there for Sunderland.

It’s a personal favourite of mine – great ground, great atmosphere. We all seemed to rise to the occasion.

Johnson scored a 90th-minute goal to give the visitors a 1-0 victory in Sunday afternoon's Tyne-Wear derby.

The Black Cats have now won four consecutive derbies for the first time ever and Johnson has scored in three straight games at St James' Park.

"Three years in a row, they must hate me here!” Johnson said. "I’m delighted. That's three wins here with three clean sheets - you can’t ask for much more.

"It’s a personal favourite of mine - great ground, great atmosphere. We all seemed to rise to the occasion."

The 27-year-old winger looked set to be substituted but a change of tactics from Sunderland boss Gus Poyet paid off as Johnson struck with just moments left.

"The manager said when I was over his side 'five minutes', but I said 'no, I’m alright'. Maybe that worked in my favour," he said.

More from Newcastle V Sunderland

"I was disappointed because I should have scored earlier on so if I missed again, I would have been gutted tonight. But I took my time and settled myself and thankfully it went in.

"It gives us a great boost, it’s been coming in recent weeks. Today was the end of some hard work."
