Martin’s Starting Stat

I was at the Etihad Stadium on Monday evening. Man City have now won their last seven Premier League games and have lost just two of their last 29, avenging their previous league defeat which was at Liverpool on April 13. They have scored two or more goals in 13 of the last 14 Premier League games and have won four of the last five at home to Liverpool in the Premier League. In fact, those are their only four wins in a nine year period of 21 matches between the two.

This was Liverpool’s first Premier League away defeat of 2014. The last time they lost on the road in the league was the final week of 2013 when they lost away at both Manchester City and Chelsea.

Sergio Aguero has now scored 29 goals in his last 32 appearances and 18 in his last 21 in the Premier League. It only took him 23 seconds after coming on as a substitute as well!

Hi. How many times have Liverpool played MNF and won? Who has the worst record for MNF? Thanks, Sam

MARTIN SAYS: We can’t break it down into Monday Night Football appearances for you, but with the help of our friends at Opta we can tell you how many times each team has played a Premier League game on a Monday (including Bank Holiday matches) and explain their record in those games.

Liverpool have played 218 Premier League games on a Monday, which is 18 more Monday matches than any other side. The defeat against Manchester City means that their Monday record now reads like this: P218 W106 D52 L60

They have a Monday win percentage of 48.85%, which is the fourth best record in the Premier League. The most successful team on a Monday is Manchester United, who have won 115 of their 195 games on that day, losing 36 of them (I suspect they have the best record on every other day of the week as well!) Liverpool are the only other team to have won more than 100 Premier League matches on a Monday, while Arsenal and Chelsea are the only two sides with a Monday win percentage above 50%.

Tottenham have lost 68 Premier League on a Monday, more than any other team. The current Premier League team with the worst win record on Mondays is Crystal Palace, who have won only two of their 16 games played. They will get a chance to improve that when they play Sunderland on Monday Night Football on November 3.

Goalscoring starts

Hi Martin. Happy to read your column once again. With 26 goals being scored on match day one of the new Premier League season, I'm wondering if this is the lowest number of goals ever scored on match day one of a Premier League season? Best regards! Sheikh, LFC fan in Ghana.

MARTIN SAYS: Twenty-six goals is about average for the opening weekend of a Premier League season and we saw one more goal scored this year than on Matchday One of last season.

The lowest number of goals scored on the first weekend is the 18 we saw in both 2011/12 and 1998/99. In 2011/12 only nine games were played (Tottenham’s match against Everton was called off following the London riots) and so 1998/99 witnessed the lowest goals-per-game ratio on Matchday One with just 1.8 goals scored per game. There were four goalless draws in the Premier League that weekend (Blackburn v Derby, Newcastle v Charlton, Middlesbrough v Leeds and Everton v Aston Villa all finished 0-0).

It’s worth mentioning that there were only 23 goals scored on the second weekend – and two more goalless draws. Maybe teams are a little bit more anxious to avoid defeat in the opening fixtures?

The best goalscoring start to a Premier League season came in 2003/04 when we saw 36 goals scored – that’s 3.6 goals per game. There were no goalless draws and a few big scorelines including Fulham 3-2 Middlesbrough, Blackburn 5-1 Wolves and Manchester United 4-0 Bolton.

Pass and prove

Tottenham moved the ball 48 times before finally scoring against QPR. Has there been a goal with more build up passes? Best regards, Tore Ostgard

MARTIN SAYS: You are referring to Nacer Chadli’s goal, which was the third in Tottenham’s 4-0 win over QPR. We asked our chums at Opta to go through their records to find out if there has been a Premier League goal with more passes in the build-up.

They have only been keeping data on this since 2006/07, but in that time period no goal has come close and Tottenham have the record for the longest sequence before a goal they have ever recorded.

The previous best was a goal scored by Ashley Young for Manchester United against Blackburn on April 2, 2012. That goal featured 37 passes in the build-up.

Please let us know if you can remember any goals that have seen more passes in the build-up. I personally recall the 24-pass goal that Esteban Cambiasso scored for Argentina against Serbia & Montenegro in the 2006 World Cup. I remember that there was a feeling early in the move that it might end with something special. Well Chadli’s goal doubled that!

Long time on top

Hi Martin. Love the column. As Chelsea are already top and are most people's favourite to win the league, I was wondering which team has had the most consecutive days at the top of the Premier League. Many thanks, Ed

MARTIN SAYS: Chelsea are no longer top of the table, following Tottenham's 4-0 win over Crystal Palace. Nevertheless, I can tell you that the longest continuous run that one side has enjoyed on the top of the Premier League table is 258 days. Back in 1993/94, Manchester United spent almost 37 straight weeks on top of the table as they secured their second Premier League title by eight points from Blackburn Rovers. They topped the table in early September and never completed a day lower than first for the rest of the season.

In a 38-game season, Chelsea hold the record, having topped the table for 256 consecutive days in the 2005/06 season under Jose Mourinho.

We have seen two teams spend more than 170 consecutive days on top of the table without going on to win the title. In 1997/98, Manchester United led for 175 days, but were eventually beaten by Arsenal, while in 1995/96, Newcastle enjoyed a run of 174 consecutive days on top before being beaten to the title by Manchester United.

MARTIN SAYS: I assume you’re asking this question after I wrote last week about Everton being the team with the most Premier League losses. I can tell you that Manchester United have lost 127 Premier League games, which is fewer defeats than 22 other sides. That’s a remarkable record given that they have played in every Premier League season.

Below I have detailed how many matches have been lost by every side to have played in the Premier League – and to answer your other question, there are 46 of them.
