Sky Sports understands Liverpool striker Fabio Borini is set to join Sunderland on a season-long loan deal.
The Italy Under-21 international is having a medical on Wearside as he looks to kick-start his career in the Premier League under compatriot Paolo Di Canio.
Borini has not featured under Brendan Rodgers so far this season and the acquisition of Victor Moses has seen him slip further down the pecking order at Anfield.
The 22-year-old former Chelsea man scored just two goals in 20 appearances last season following his £10.5m move from Roma in July 2012 - when he became one of Rodgers' first signings.
Borini saw his season badly disrupted by injury last term and he now looks set to move on in a bid to secure more regular action.
Sunderland have made a poor start to the new Premier League season, suffering defeats to Fulham and Crystal Palace and claiming their only point so far from a 1-1 draw at Southampton.
