Sunderland boss Steve Bruce may be forced to bring in a new goalkeeper on an emergency loan deal after finding himself short on options.

The Black Cats are down to the bare bones after seeing first-choice shot-stopper Simon Mignolet suffer a badly broken nose in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

The Belgian appears certain to require surgery, ruling him out of action for the foreseeable future.

With Craig Gordon still recuperating from a knee injury, Keiren Westwood is now the only senior keeper available to Bruce.

The Republic of Ireland international, who made his Premier League bow for the club over the weekend, is considered to be top=flight quality, but Bruce admits he needs cover in an important area of the field.

"Craig is nowhere near and Trevor Carson, who is on loan at Bury, has hurt his back, so we may have to look for special dispensation and maybe get a loan somehow," said Bruce.

"We'll see how things are in the next 24 to 48 hours."

While keen to bolster his ranks, Bruce has no qualms about throwing summer signing Westwood into his starting XI.

He said: "I'm really pleased for Keiren because he hasn't had a chance.

"And to be fair to him, he has worked extremely hard."
