Sky Sports News understands Sunderland are in talks with Burnley regarding full-back Tyrone Mears.
The Black Cats are keen to bolster their defensive options and feel Mears would be a useful addition to their squad.
The 26-year-old joined Burnley from Derby last summer, penning a three-year contract at Turf Moor.
He has become an integral part of the Clarets' plans this term, under former boss Owen Coyle and current coach Brian Laws.
Mears can boast the likes of Manchester City, West Ham and Marseille on an impressive CV and has plenty of top level experience.
A number of assured displays this term have underlined his Premier League credentials and helped to raise his profile.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has been particularly impressed by the versatile defender and is believed to have approached Burnley in the hope of securing a deal.
