Djibril Cisse believes Sunderland can push their way into European contention this season.
The Black Cats have made a steady, yet unspectacular start to the Premier League season, claiming two victories in their seven games so far.
However, having spent big over the summer the ambitious North East club have their sights set much higher than mid-table.
France international Cisse, who is on a season-long loan from Marseille, believes Sunderland have all the credentials to become a top six outfit.
"The club's objective is to become an outside contender for Europe in the near future," he told France Football.
"Everything is already in place, money and facilities, to develop a big project.
"Those in charge of the club are very ambitious and I believe they will be successful."
