Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy has signed a one-year contract extension at the Stadium of Light.

The new deal means the Irish forward, who scored the winner in last season's 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough which secured Premier League survival, is tied to the Black Cats until 2012.

And the 25-year-old is pleased to have agreed the new terms because he did not want to leave the club.

"It's pleasing. I've always wanted to stay here and it's nice to get the extension," Murphy told Sunderland's official website.

"It's a big club, the supporters are great and we're going in the right direction.

"It's a different club to the one I joined three years ago."
