Paul McShane admits it is imperative that Sunderland start picking up points on a regular basis.
The 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers on 2nd January saw Roy Keane's men slip into the relegation zone.
Furthermore, The Black Cats have picked up just two Premier League victories in their last 15 fixtures.
And ahead of Sunday's encounter against Portsmouth, live on Sky Sports 1, McShane has challenged his team-mates to learn from their failings.
"When you lose a game you ponder and I think pondering is a good thing at times," he said.
"People will have a look at their performances and try to improve. Sometimes, it is a good thing.
"But we need to start picking up points - we should have picked up points against Blackburn and it was disappointing, so Portsmouth is quite an important game for us now."
