Espanyol have confirmed an interest in Sunderland's Julio Arca, but concede he might be hard to acquire.
The club's new sports director Paco Herrera is a big fan of the Argentine ace, who impressed for The Black Cats last term despite their relegation from The Premiership.
The Barcelona-based outfit have been linked with a move for the former Boca Juniors man recently and now the club have stepped up their interest.
Arca is believed to be considering his future after dropping out of England's top-flight and a big-money offer could tempt Sunderland to sell.
While no formal bid has been lodged Espanyol are trying to offload players to accommodate Arca in their squad.
"We only have limited places in our squad so we'd need to have players leave before making a signing," said Herrera.
