Niall Quinn has urged Julio Arca to ignore interest from La Liga and stay at Sunderland.
The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Espanyol and admitted this week that it was a long-held dream of his to play in Spain.
The Argentine stayed with The Black Cats last time they were relegated to The Championship but, after suffering the same fate again last season, is finally expected to depart the North East for pastures new.
One last ray of hope for fans is the potential changing of the guard at Sunderland, with Quinn and his consortium hoping to complete a takeover of the club.
The Irishman is determined to bring success back to Sunderland and would like Arca to stay to help the club enter a new era.
"As we have no manager at present I've spoken to Julio at length and expressed a desire to see him playing for Sunderland next season," Quinn told Sunderland's official website.
"As always in football, it will be his agent and Julio himself who will determine if that is the case."
