Iron seal Black Cats swoop

Scunthorpe United have announced the capture of Irish international Joe Murphy.

Scunthorpe United have announced the capture of Irish international Joe Murphy.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper arrives from Sunderland on a free transfer and has penned a two-year deal at Glanford Park.

"I want to get back playing," said Murphy. "I had a move to West Brom when I was 20. I'm 24 now and I haven't really played.

"I had a couple of loan spells which I enjoyed and that's what I want to do - I want to get back playing and I think this is the club where I can do that. The club has a bit of potential as well, so I jumped at the chance."

Meanwhile, Scunthorpe have confirmed their retained list - and as a result Richie Ryan, Wayne Corden and Andy Parton have departed the club.

However, Lee Ridley, Andy Crosby, Cliff Byrne, Matt Sparrow, Steve Torpey, Ian Baraclough, Peter Beagrie and Neil MacKenzie have all been offered fresh terms.

"I expect answers from the players as quickly as possible and I've asked them to do that," said Iron boss Brian Laws.

"There are some players who I've offered reduced terms to because I need to spread my budget as best I can which will allow me to bring in some new players."
