Sunderland caretaker Kevin Ball will not be judging Jon Stead on his previous performances for The Black Cats.
The former Blackburn striker has struggled for goals in the North East following a £1.8 million switch from Ewood Park last summer.
Ball saw Stead miss a late opportunity again Wigan last week, but is looking for him to find of the back of the net against Bolton.
"It would be unfair of me to comment on what has gone on before with Jon but he was unlucky in the Wigan game," said Ball.
"Whether he was favourite for the ball with that late chance I don't know.
"But what I would tell him is that if a situation like that arises again, just put the ball in the back of the net."
