Tykes missed out on four

Andy Ritchie missed out on four players on deadline day, including Chris Brown.

Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie has revealed he tried to sign Chris Brown, Matthew Kilgallon, Liam Chilvers and Alan Lee on transfer deadline day.

Sunderland ace Brown has been limited to just one substitute appearances this term, but while Mick McCarthy was willing to let the striker leave The Stadium of Light on loan - he wanted him to go to The Championship.

Also on Ritchie's wanted list was Leeds defender Kilgallon, however manager Kevin Blackwell does not have the quantity at the back to allow one of his rising stars to depart on loan.

Along with missing out on Kilgallon the club tried to sign Colchester's Chilvers, but they failed in their pursuit of the defender along with Cardiff striker Lee.

"We made several enquiries to strengthen our defence and forward line but none came to fruition," explained Ritchie to the club's official website.

"We asked Mick McCarthy at Sunderland about bringing Chris Brown to Oakwell, but he wanted the lad to play at Championship level.

"We got another knock-back from Leeds when we asked about Matthew Kilgallon and they wouldn't let him out and we were told by Colchester that Liam Chilvers was definitely not for sale.

"Cardiff also knocked us back when we enquired about bringing Alan Lee here."
