Anthony Le Tallec enhanced his claims for a starting spot at Sunderland with a goal for France Under-21s.
The young attacker is spending the season on loan at The Stadium of Light from Liverpool to build up his experience.
He was left out of the squad for last Saturday's opening day defeat to Charlton Athletic and is prevented from facing his parent club this weekend.
But he served a timely reminder of his ability to Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy on Tuesday when scoring while on international duty.
Le Tallec played the full 90 minutes of the Under-21s' 2-2 draw with Italy and scored in the second half for France.
He also returned to Wearside without picking up an injury, something which always pleases McCarthy.
The Sunderland boss said: "All you ask is for the players to come back in one piece."
