Black Cats agree Welsh fee

Sunderland have agreed a fee for Stockport County winger Andy Welsh.

Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy has confirmed that the North East club have agreed a fee with Stockport County for winger Andy Welsh.

The Black Cats expect to complete the move for the attack-minded midfielder early next week after being impressed with the 20-year-old in training this week.

The Championship high-flyers will pay a nominal fee to the League One bottom club for the left-sided player and McCarthy was pleased to secure the services of the talented youngster.

"We have agreed a deal with Stockport and Andy will join us," McCarthy told the club's official website.

"I saw a lot of him last season and he has a lot of potential. He is a left-sider and a good footballer.

"We were on the lookout for a left-sided player and we looked at various people such as Michael McIndoe at Doncaster before Taff (McCarthy's assistant Ian Evans) saw Andy.

"I think he is someone who can get better and improve and I am looking forward to working with him.

"Having seen him play, he has got a lot of ability. He can come inside and play off the front men and get behind people."

Welsh's departure from Edgeley Park follows the club's sale of striker Luke Beckett to another Championship side in Sheffield United this week.
