Sunderland are plotting a move for Andy Welsh, after handing the Stockport County winger a trial.

Welsh is spending this week training with the Championship club with the aim of clinching a move to The Stadium of Light.

The 20-year-old, who trained with Blackburn Rovers in the summer, has been unable to nail down a regular starting berth at Edgeley Park.

But that has not deterred Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy from inviting Welsh up to Wearside to assess his ability.

Hatters boss Sammy McIlroy confirmed the trial and admits he will not block any bid from Sunderland, if Welsh impresses enough to earn an offer.

"Andy has been up there for a couple of days," said McIlroy.

"Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy is a big fan and we'll have to see what happens. I haven't heard from Mick yet but it could be a permanent deal.

"If one is offered there is no way we could stand in the lad's way."
