Ipswich ended Sunderland's unbeaten league run as Tommy Miller's penalty in first half injury time separated the teams at Portman Road.

Miller struck to lift Ipswich into fourth spot and just three points behind Bank Holiday Monday's opponents after a tight tussle in Suffolk.

The chances were shared between the teams as Darren Bent's flick from Ian Westlake's cross was pushed wide by Thomas Myhre while Miller shot narrowly over.

Sunderland offered a response with Darren Byfield heading over before the striker's close-range shot was kept out by Kelvin Davis.

The breakthrough arrived on the stroke of half time after Bent's surging run was halted by Myhre and Miller rifled in the resulting spot kick.

After the break, there was again little between the sides with substitute Marcus Stewart nodding a Jason McAteer cross wide and Gary Breen heading over.

Veteran midfielder Jim Magilton had an opportunity to wrap up the points ten minutes from time but was denied by Myhre.
