First Division promotion hopefuls Sunderland are reportedly lining up a £500,000 bid for Bradford's Andy Gray.

The former Leeds United starlet can operate as a midfielder or striker and, after a series of impressive displays for The Bantams, Gray has seemingly caught the eye of Mick McCarthy.

The former Republic of Ireland boss has made no secret of his desire to bolster his shot-shy strike-force and with Rotherham's Darren Byfield having arrived last week, McCarthy is slowly stamping his own mark on The Black Cats.

Although Bradford boss Bryan Robson will be keen to resist any bid to prise away his prized asset, financial difficulties may force the Yorkshire club into a sale.

Cash-strapped City have the fear of administration hanging over Valley Parade and with Scotland international Gray the club's most saleable asset, the link with Sunderland could have credence.

The 26-year-old has only scored six goals this term, but his overall play has attracted international recognition, with a Scotland call-up this year.
