SCUNTHORPE UNITED have wrapped up the signing of former Sunderland defender Cliff Byrne.

The 21-year-old was released by The Black Cats last month and returns to Glanford Park after shining on loan last season.

Byrne spent three months with The Iron and manager Brian Laws had been eager to tie up a permanent swoop for the youngster.

The Irish starlet has now signed a three-year deal with the Third Division outfit and will be aiming to cement a regular spot in the starting line-up.

Scunthorpe had been confident of landing Byrne and were merely awaiting the contract to arrive back from the player, who has been on Under-21 duty with Republic of Ireland.
