JAPANESE midfielder Kazuyuki Toda has begun his trial with Sunderland in the hope of winning a move to the Stadium of Light.
The 25-year-old World cup star will spend the next two weeks on Wearside so that Black Cats boss Howard Wilkinson can have a closer look at him in action.
The Shimizu S-Pulse ace is equally at home in midfield or in defence and is believed to be keen on a move to England.
Wilkinson is keen to bolster his squad as the side has been decimated by injuries and he wants to bring in new players to help the team climb away from trouble at the wrong end of the table.
Meanwhile, Sunderland have allowed Scunthorpe to extend the loan spell of striker Cliff Byrne for a third month after impressing at Glanford Park.
