Kilbane started The Black Cats' opening Premiership fixture of the new campaign at Blackburn but has not even figured on the substitutes' bench subsequently.
The 25-year-old was involved in an unsavoury incident during pre-season when he reacted to abuse from a section of Sunderland fans.
The Republic of Ireland international admitted his recent absence from the line-up is partially due to that bust-up as manager Peter Reid has opted to take the former West Brom man out of the firing line.
But Kilbane is adamant he has put the matter behind him and is eager to be thrust back into the spotlight.
He also admitted that he would contemplate leaving Wearside if he is unable force his way back into the team.
"I'm not involved in games and the manager is not picking me for that (pre-season incident) particular reason," said Kilbane.
"It does hurt and I want to be back in the side.
"You get a little bit of stick from the terraces but you've got to take and really I've got to get on with it now.
"I believe I'm good enough to be playing in the side but you can't be playing reserve team football throughout your career."
