Women's football: David Parker says Birmingham in title fight with Chelsea and Liverpool

Birmingham City Ladies boss David Parker insists it is a three-horse race for the title as he prepares his side for the visit of Arsenal to Solihull Moors on Sunday.

Birmingham will regain top spot in FA WSL 1 with a win against Arsenal, who announced on Friday that Pedro Martinez Losa would succeed Shelley Kerr as the club’s new manager from September 15.

But Parker insists there is no pressure on his side who currently sit third in the table with two games in hand on title rivals Liverpool and Chelsea.

“It is very much a three-horse race for the title now,” Parker told Sky Sports.

“Liverpool and Chelsea were expected to be in this position and we have gatecrashed the party and piled a lot of pressure on the big-spending clubs."

Skipper Kelly Smith will take charge of Arsenal for this weekend’s clash as they try and maintain their recent form which has seen them win seven of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Parker knows his side are in for a tough game on Sunday but insists every match is a difficult proposition in the FA WSL.

“Every game is a big game in this league so it is no different than any other,” he said. “It is a hard task approaching any game and gaining points.

“A positive result though will put us back in the driving seat. It’s all ifs and buts at the moment with the way results are going, but all three sides vying for the title will drop points from here on in.”
