Youngster signs new one-year contract with Birmingham

Birmingham defender Jared Wilson has signed a new one-year contract with the Premier League club. The 20-year-old made his debut against QPR in October last season after coming through the youth team ranks at the club. Manager Alex McLeish then packed the youngster off to League Two Chesterfield in order to gain valuable first-team experience. The youngster has been rewarded for his recent progress and Wilson is already looking forward to cementing his place in the first-team squad next season. "My whole aim last year after I played the match (against QPR) was to go out and get some first-team experience so I went out to Chesterfield to get that," he told the club's official website. "I think the contract is a bit of a reward for doing well in the youth team and whilst I have been away on loan.

Opportunities

"It shows the manager thinks a lot of me which is good for me. When I come back for pre-season, I am going to give 100 per cent in every training session. "Maybe I might be in the squad this season with the use of seven substitutes, which would be great for me in the Premier League." However Wilson will not be getting downhearted if he finds himself surplus to requirements for the time being. "But if I don't manage to make that step then I may go out on loan for maybe the majority of the season."
