McLeish lands left-back from Hibs

Birmingham City have completed the capture of defender David Murphy from Hibernian. Blues agreed a £1.5million deal with the SPL outfit on Wednesday and now he has penned a three-and-a-half year deal after passing a routine medical. The 23-year-old made 13 Premier League appearances with Middlesbrough before moving to Hibs and manager Alex McLeish believes the left-back is keen to prove himself in England's top flight. "He wants to prove himself in the Premiership," McLeish told the club's official website. "Any time I've seen him in Scotland over the past two or three years he's a full-back who likes to get forward but has obviously got good defensive qualities as well.

Admired

"He's a player I've admired for a long time and I made enquiries to see if he had any Scottish blood in him when I had the Scotland job because we would have certainly brought him into the fold with the national team given the displays that we saw up there." McLeish is remaining tight-lipped on whether Murphy will make his debut against Chelsea this weekend due to a lack of match fitness and a niggling hamstring strain. "He's not done much this week and he's not played for a couple of weeks also with a hamstring injury so there's no point in making any decisions at this point," he concluded.
