Birmingham are believed to be tracking Lille defender Rafael Schmitz.

Blues boss Steve Bruce is thought to be keen on bringing in a new defender to bolster his rearguard for the forthcoming season.

Bruce has had Schmitz watched on several occasions and is now thought to be ready to make a move for the Brazilian.

Schmitz's agent Sandro Wienhage claims Birmingham and another mystery Premier League side are chasing the player's signature.

"We are negotiating with a Premier League club, which is Birmingham, and another English club are interested," Wienhage told the Birmingham Mail.

"But they haven't made a bid yet. We are negotiating on the phone and are waiting for a confirmation fax to finalise the contract.

"Two other clubs want Rafael: Sion in Switzerland, but the player isn't interested, and Valenciennes in France, but Rafael won't consider their offer.

"Rafael is under contract with Lille until 2010 and would be happy if he was to stay next season."
