Birmingham City remain top of the Championship after a 4-0 away thrashing of bottom club Southend United.

Steve Tilson's Shrimpers were brave in taking Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur to extra time before losing their midweek Carling Cup quarter-final clash, but they were outclassed by a Blues side who look on course for promotion.

DJ Campbell (8) gave the Second City club the lead at Roots Hall before Stephen Clemence (38) doubled the advantage.

Gary McSheffrey (54) ended any hopes of a Southend comeback in the second half before Radhi Jaidi (84) capped a fine day in Essex for Steve Bruce's side.

Preston North End are up to second after David Nugent's strike (33) gave Paul Simpson's side a 1-0 home win over high-flying Colchester United.

Derby County dropped a place in the table after a goalless draw at Burnley, while Stoke City moved up to fourth after a 1-0 win at Ipswich Town.

Liam Lawrence (71) claimed all three points for The Potters at Portman Road.

Sheffield Wednesday claimed a late 3-3 draw with Southampton at Hillsborough, despite going two goals down after strikes from Grzegorz Rasiak (14) and Kenwyne Jones (26).

Glenn Whelan (28) made it 2-1 before Bradley Wright-Phillips (50) restored Southampton's two-goal lead.

Whelan (69) then brought the sides level with his second goal before on-loan Fulham goalkeeper Mark Crossley scored his first-ever senior goal three minutes into injury time to claim a dramatic point for The Owls.

Cardiff City's winless run has been extended to seven games after a goalless draw at Leicester City, while West Bromwich Albion came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Plymouth Argyle.

Barry Hayles (23) and Lilian Nalis (40) gave Ian Holloway's Pilgrims the advantage, but a brace from Kevin Phillips made sure of a point for The Baggies.

Neil Clement was sent off late on for West Brom at Home Park.

Wolverhampton Wanderers left it late to claim a 2-2 draw with Norwich City at Molineux.

Robert Earnshaw (10) gave The Canaries the lead before Karl Henry (36) equalised for Wolves.

Earnshaw struck a second goal on 77 minutes, as Norwich looked on course for an away win, but Wolves' Jody Craddock struck before the final whistle for a share of the spoils.

Luton Town defeated Coventry City 3-1 at Kenilworth Road, with Ahmet Brkovic (47) giving The Hatters the lead.

The Croat then put into his own net on 59 minutes to make it 1-1, but Rowan Vine (66) and Dean Morgan (68) claimed the three points for Mike Newell's side.

A goal from Martin Rowlands (15) gave Queens Park Rangers a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Barnsley at Loftus Road.

Finally, Yorkshire rivals Leeds United and Hull City played out a 0-0 draw in the lunchtime kick-off at Elland Road.

The two sides could not be faulted for their commitment, but that touch of class was lacking and the strugglers had to settle for a point apiece.
