Southampton hope to add to the signing of David Livermore with the capture of Birmingham striker Clinton Morrison.
Manager Harry Redknapp is desperate to bolster his side after getting off to a shaky start in the club's first attempt to return to The Premiership and his priority now lies with finding a striker.
Irish international Morrison - virtually frozen out at St Andrews with the signings of Walter Pandiani and Mikael Forssell - fits the bill and is looking for a move, although the reported £2 million fee could prove a problem.
The 26-year-old is unhappy at Birmingham and said on Tuesday that a host of clubs were interested.
The appeal of a Premiership club could further dent Southampton's hopes but Redknapp is hoping to beat off the competition.
The former West Ham boss was coy on developments and told the club's official website: "I am looking around but it is not easy to get people.
"But we do have a few possibilities in mind and we certainly need to bring in a couple if we can."
