Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce will maintain his interest in Marcio Amoroso despite the Brazilian striker picking up an injury.

Amoroso has been training with Blues for the past ten days in a bid to win a contract with the Premiership club.

The 30-year-old has left Borussia Dortmund and has pitched up at St Andrews after an unsuccessful trial spell with Scottish champions Celtic.

But his prospects of convincing Bruce to hand him a contract have been dealt a blow after he picked up a calf injury in training.

He will now miss Blues' friendly with Cheltenham Town on Saturday and is unlikely to be fit enough to join the club's pre-season tour to Germany.

Bruce is disappointed he will not be able to scrutinise Amoroso even closer but will not be dropping his interest in the temperamental forward.

"Marcio was coming over to this country and he was looking for somewhere to get a pre-season in and play," Bruce told the Evening Mail.

"I know his agent very well and it was decided that we'd have a look to see what he's like and he'd have a look at us.

"He injured his calf in training and he won't play on Saturday. It's unlikely he'll make the Germany trip which was also part of the plan.

"He's been here a week and his behaviour has been impeccable. He's enjoyed working hard and he's been walking round with a smile on his face.

"It's just sod's law that when he was going to play for us, he gets injured."
