Birmingham City midfielder Bryan Hughes has turned down an offer of a new three-year contract at St Andrews.

Blues had hoped to tie down the midfielder, whose current contract expires in the summer.

However, the 27-year-old has spurned their offer - much to the disappointment of manager Steve Bruce.

"We are surprised and disappointed that Bryan has refused to sign his new contract," said manager Steve Bruce.

"We have made him what we believe to be a good offer for three years but unfortunately he wants to keep his options open.

"That is no good to me or the squad really, and although I can understand it, I need people that are committed to the cause, so we have withdrawn our offer and we will look to replace him in the summer."

Hughes, who has played nearly 300 games for Birmingham since joining from Wrexham, is sure to attract a great deal of interest with the news of his rejection.
