The new season is upon us, with the 2014/15 campaign starting to take shape.

Here at Sky Sports we will look to take you to the very heart of the Football League over the coming months, with our Spotlight features intended to give you a greater insight into the clubs and players that keep us on the edge of our seats.

We hope to bring you the views and thoughts of a representative from each of the 72 teams over the course of the season, with those involved asked to give their take on the division they compete in, the club that pays their wages and those we should all be keeping an eye on.

Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson is first into the hot-seat, with the Cherries striker taking time out to discuss stepping up into the Championship and ambitious projects on the south coast with Chris Burton.

QUICK QUESTIONS

  • Best side faced: I’d say Brentford. They work hard, they have stepped up a division and are all hungry. They want to do well and they gave us a good game. We ended up winning the game 1-0, but they are one of the better sides we’ve faced.
  • Player of the year so far: I think the majority of the team have done well. The defence have been solid at times, we’ve got a good midfield and we all work hard. We all complement each other, so I don’t think there has been a standout performer. We’ve all been playing well together. It’s just the results that haven’t been happening for us and we haven’t been getting the luck of the draw. It will come soon, I’m sure.
  • Best characters in the dressing room: It’s great to have Harry Arter and Tommy Elphick around. They are funny guys. We’ve got a few young players, we’re all of a similar age. There is a lot of banter that goes around the changing room. It’s a vibrant environment to be in.
  • The gaffer: He’s great. He helps players progress, which is one of the reasons why I decided to come here. He’s got his philosophies and his principles that he likes to stick to and we adhere to that. He’s a good motivator. He motivates the team well and everyone knows their job and what the manager expects of us. He’s a good manager and I think he’ll do very well in his managerial career.

How would you sum up Bournemouth’s start to the season?

Steady. I think we have had a few too many draws, games where we felt we should have got more out of the game. The first few games we started off okay and then had a bit of a dip. We’re just looking to get back on track as soon as possible.

You are having a bit of a wobble at the moment, finding wins hard to come by, but it’s best to get that run out of the way early isn’t it, in the knowledge that your luck will turn at some stage?

The games that we have lost this season, the games that we have been drawing, we’ve been playing well. I think it’s fair to say that we have been the better team in the majority of those games. But it’s a results business and we haven’t been getting those at the minute. But, hopefully, it will change sooner rather than later, while the pitches are nice and flat, green and suited to the style of football that we want to play.

On a personal level, you must be delighted at how quickly you have settled in the Championship – among the goals early, which is always important for a striker at a new club?

Coming here, with a bit of a price tag on me as well, the pressure was on to score some goals early on. There is no better way to start than to score on my debut, so I’m happy with that and have carried on scoring up to the last few games. I have had a bit of a dip in form, in terms of goalscoring, so I just need to get back on track as soon as possible.

How have you found the step up from League One, are there any noticeable differences?

No. It’s been a good transition. There are a few teams that got promoted that I played against last season that I have played this season already, and they’ve probably been among the better teams in this league. They are a bit hungrier because they want to stay in the division. I know what they are about, so it’s been good to play against them, and a few other teams in the division as well.

I suppose you have that hunger as well don’t you, the likes of yourself and Britt Assombalonga at Forest are making that step up and want to prove that the talent is there in the Football League?

There are a lot of good players in the Football League, but the opportunities don’t come around that often and you really need to grab it with both hands. I think myself and Britt have done that and hit the ground running at our new clubs. He’s scored a few more goals than me at the minute and has done really well. I think it’s been a smooth transition for both us and we are showing that if you can score goals, you can do it at any level and do it in the Championship as well.

And for you, why Bournemouth – there were a few clubs sniffing around, weren’t there?

There were a few. Bournemouth stood out for me with the style of play that they have. The manager here, Eddie Howe, I know about his philosophies and the way he likes to play football. That’s how I like to play as well. I thought Bournemouth were the standout club for me and that I would progress here.

It’s all about the collective down there as well isn’t it, there are no egos and everyone plays for each other?

There are a great bunch of lads here, who all play for each other. We’re quite a young group as well, we’re hungry and have got the same ambition – which is to play in the Premier League. There is no better way than to reach that together, as a team. I would say that was a main thing when I came here and it’s helped me to perform better on the pitch as well.

They are setting lofty targets as a club – is the Premier League realistic within the next two or three years?

Of course. If you don’t believe that you are going to get to the Premier League, you will never get there. In our minds and hearts we all want to get to the Premier League and whether it’s this season or in the next few seasons, the ambition is there from the players, the manager and the club. I think we are all pulling in the right direction and hopefully we’ll be there sooner rather than later.

Craig Cathcart cancelled out Harry Arter’s spectacular goal to secure a 1-1 draw for Watford against Bournemouth.

You’re very much focused on the present for now though aren’t you and a tough run to come – Cardiff in the cup and then Wigan and Derby in the league. It doesn’t get any easier does it?

Every game in this league is hard. You can think that some teams should be beating other teams, but results have shown differently. You have to take every game as it comes. We’ll look forward to Cardiff in the cup and then take each game at a time.

Does the cup come at a good time, allowing you to mix things up a bit and take away the pressure of the league?

No, we haven’t had a win in the last six games so the focus is just on getting a win to our name. If the manager makes changes, those who come in will be hungry and trying to impress to get a starting place in the league games. Everyone is going to be bang at it and hopefully we can get a result.

But overall, as a club, there is a lot to be excited about and a bright future ahead?

I’d like to think so. We play football in the right way, we have got ambition. We are one of the smaller teams in the division, you could say, but we’ll keep playing our football and see where we end up at the end of the season.
