Bolton will offer new contracts to Emile Heskey, Eidur Gudjohnsen and goalkeeper Adam Bogdan among others.

Heskey, 37, and Gudjohnsen, 36, signed for Wanderers on short-term deals until the end of the season in December and have both become important members of the first-team.

Bogdan, who signed a three-year contract in 2012, has suffered with injury problems this season but manager Neil Lennon has confirmed the 27-year-old is one of a number of players he wants to keep.

He said: “We are pleased to have Adam back. We’ve missed him for a large chunk of the season and I think he’s one of the best goalkeepers around at this level.

“If I can sign him on a new contract then that would be a big plus for us. You need a very good goalkeeper to build any sort of team and he’s one we want to keep.

“We will also be offering new contracts to Heskey and Gudjohnsen because they've made a massive contribution. If we didn’t feel they had then we’d tell them but they’ve been immense, and not just on the field. Their influence in the dressing room has been fantastic.

“Heskey has been different class and Gudjohnsen has got six goals in his last 18 games. He’s back in the Iceland team and they have a good chance of making the European Championship. I think it would be a fitting way for him to end his career if he did that – a great story.

“There are players coming out of contract and we have made offers to some of them. But there will be players leaving and that’s because we want to bring our own players in and improve.”
