Brentford boss Mark Warburton has hit out at criticism of his January transfer policy.

While many of the Bees' promotion rivals strengthened their squads, Warburton brought in only Lewis Macleod and Jack O'Connell - neither of whom have made a single appearance - and Chris Long on loan from Everton.

Warburton insisted at the time he did not want to unsettle the squad he already had, but questions have been raised again this week after the Bees slipped out of the play-off spots.

However, he said: "There will be more twists and turns to come and this squad is strong enough to get us there. We have options.

"I am sick of hearing about what we should have done in January.

"We had various options but certain players that would have come in would have had to play and had to start. I will never sign a player that has to start, it is inappropriate.

"Players have to work hard to get the starting jersey."
