Sky Bet Championship: Rotherham denied 'blatant' penalty against Charlton, says assistant

Rotherham assistant manager Paul Raynor believed his side were denied a certain penalty as they left Charlton with a point.

A last-minute equaliser by Danny Ward dampened the first game in charge at the Valley for new Charlton manager Guy Luzon, leaving them still waiting for their first win at home since October.

However, with manager Steve Evans still locked in discussions with referee Scott Duncan, Raynor was angry with a handball decision not given against defender Andre Bikey.

"They say things even themselves out over the season, and we are going to get some penalties if that is the case," he said.

"The handball is absolutely blatant, sometimes it is difficult to see from the dugout but there was no guesswork today.

"Charlton created some opportunities, they looked dangerous on the break, they do sit in and hit you on the counter attack.

"But I do think we dominated proceedings, we looked dangerous ourselves and as the game went on we created a number of opportunities."

Charlton and Rotherham shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw

A game largely devoid of much in the way of goalmouth action was settled with two goals in the last 10 minutes of the contest.

However, both sides managed to strike the woodwork in an otherwise disappointing first half. Ben Pringle was picked out at the back post after seven minutes, but saw his shot bounce off the post and away to safety.

Johann Gudmundsson then lobbed over keeper Adam Collin on eighteen minutes but the ball ricocheted off the upright and into the arms of the keeper.

The handball decision on 68 minutes not given from referee Duncan clearly incensed Rotherham players and supporters behind the goal.

The mood of the visitors was blackened even further with seven minutes remaining, when Jordan Cousins struck the ball past the left of Collin from six yards out to seemingly settle the tie for the South London outfit.

However, Rotherham were rewarded for their effort when Ward equalised in injury time after the home side failed to deal with a high ball into the box.

After the game, Charlton manager Luzon was unhappy with conceding late on, but believed his defence was better organised.

"After we led the game 1-0 five minutes towards the end, of course we are disappointed. The difference in the side was that we organised well until the last minute," he said.

"In the last two games we organised well in defence, with a line-up of 4-4-2, we knew our opponents would play a lot of long balls, and we are ready for the second ball.

"Of course they are lacking in confidence, in attack. After we scored we needed to keep a clean sheet, and we are frustrated."
