Sky Bet Championship: Kenny Jackett says Wolves lack ideas after draw with Charlton

Disappointed Wolves manager Kenny Jackett felt his side lacked ideas in attack as they missed the chance to close the gap on the Championship play-off positions after being held to a goalless home draw by Charlton.

Wolves had been chasing a fifth successive league win but could not find a way past a well-drilled Charlton side who made an impressive start to life under new manager Guy Luzon.

Jackett said: "We are disappointed. I felt that we didn't do enough to break Charlton down, particularly in the final third when we ran out of ideas too many times.

"The attitude and commitment of the players was very good and we defended very well in the second half when the counter-attack looked on for Charlton and my centre-backs were very diligent.

"But ultimately, going into the final third for us we didn't do enough with the ball.

"It was all about making the right decision at the right time, too many times we came inside instead of going outside.

"Credit to them though, they did defend well and were well organised and set-up and had a counter-attack as well."

Jackett, meanwhile, revealed after the game that Wolves have had no contact from their arch-rivals West Brom, who have been strongly linked with a move for winger Bakary Sako.

Wolves moved up to seventh in the Sky Bet Championship table despite being held to a 0-0 draw at home to Charlton

The 26-year-old Sako was not involved against Charlton as he is currently on international duty with Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Jackett said: "There has been nothing. It does seem as if there is rumour but we haven't had a bid and there is nothing there at all. Whether that is pre-empting something to come is another thing. But up to now there has been no contact.

"The prevailing principle is that if a Premier League comes in for Sako the board would have to agree the valuation and secondly we would speak to the player.

"That has always been the case and through that transparency we always feel we have got the best out of him because obviously Premier League opportunities are what a player wants.

"We always said we would talk to him if the right bid came in for him but everyone here wouldn't want that and it is not something we are inviting."

After a low-key first half at Molineux, the game moved up a gear in the second period with Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme doing well to deny Callum Harriott in the 48th minute.

Wolves winger Rajiv Van La Parra sparkled but could not find a way past goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic when well placed in the 69th minute before Ikeme did well to deny Tony Watt.

The draw ended a run of four successive league and cup defeats for Charlton and new boss Luzon felt that a point was the least that his side deserved on his bow.

Luzon was in almost constant motion in his technical area urging the side on and he said: "I am always involved in the match, it is my character you know.

"I think that when we arrived we knew that Wolves were in fantastic momentum after four wins in a row and we know that to stop that momentum and start a positive momentum for us we had to be well organised.

"We need to be close and encourage one another and I think we did well because Wolves have a lot of quality and talent in their attack and they have scored a lot of goals.

"But we were organised well and in the second half we created some chances to take all three points. But we are satisfied and delighted for our performance."

He added: "This is the first step and the second step is to continue and get more options to score in attack.

"We have kept a clean sheet only six times in 26 matches and it was very important for my first game to keep a clean sheet, and from here we need to improve.

"I am not defensive minded but if you want to collect points first you need to get a clean sheet."
