Russell Slade admitted Cardiff City are struggling after they suffered a damaging 4-2 defeat at home to Watford.

Cardiff have slipped to 12th place in the Sky Bet Championship table and are now nine points off the play-off positions after a fifth game without a win saw home fans turn on the new manager.

Slade, appointed in October to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has been in charge for only 13 games but is coming under increasing pressure to halt the slump.

Slade said: "The fans are entitled to their opinions and when the team is not playing well, as we are, then you have to expect that situation to arise.

"But when you are stood on the sidelines and have done for as many games as I have, in my career, you are only focused on finding a way back into the game.

"It's inevitable that you come under pressure when results are not going your way and it's frustrating (at) times for us.

"I'm sure that the owner (Vincent Tan), like me, is not over-enthralled with the results right now. But I have to be tunnel-visioned and we will keep working hard."

Adam Le Fondre put Cardiff ahead after 20 minutes but it was one-way traffic after that as Watford out-played their hosts as Adlene Guedioura - playing his last game on loan from Crystal Palace - equalised before Odion Ighalo put the Hornets ahead on the stroke of half-time.

It proved a telling blow as Watford ran riot after the break. Guedioura scored from 30 yards with a wonderful strike into the top-corner of David Marshall's goal before Gabriele Angella capped an emphatic team display.

It was pleasing for manager Slavisa Jokanovic after their three-game winning run was halted by Wolves on Boxing Day but he has called for greater consistency if they are to maintain their push for promotion.

Jokanovic said: "I'm happy with the team performance. We had some problems in the first 20 minutes and Cardiff scored but we reacted well and scored four good team goals.

"Sometimes in the past we have tried to resolve problems with individual actions but that is never good. This time we played and fought like a team even after making six changes to keep the team fresh. That was the most pleasing thing. When you are away from home, that is all you can ask for and I am very happy.

"The last performance [against Wolves] was the worst since I arrived at the club but here we showed good skill. But it is only one game. You cannot play well in one game and then badly the next. We need more consistency."

Kenwyne Jones scored in injury-time to save Slade from his heaviest defeat on the scoreboard but it was too little too late to save Cardiff.

Slade added: "We stuck to our game plan well early on and played well for 40 minutes but we looked jaded before half-time and then five minutes of madness cost us dearly."
