Cleveland Police have launched an appeal for information over an incident of alleged racist abuse in Blackburn's 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough earlier this month.

Rudy Gestede seemed visibly upset by something which came from a section of the home support after the final whistle at the Riverside Stadium, with the Benin international having scoring a controversial late equaliser moments earlier.

Gestede was pictured appearing to mimic a gesture to his Rovers team-mates and the incident was included in referee Mark Clattenburg's post-match report.

Last week the Football Association confirmed they were investigating the matter and had reached out to both clubs in the early stages of their enquiry.

And Cleveland Police are now asking for assistance in their own investigation.

They released a statement which read: "Police are appealing for information after an incident during a home game at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium on Saturday 29th November.

"The incident took place as the players were applauding the away fans on the pitch at the final whistle at around 5pm.

"A Middlesbrough fan in the East Stand in block 40-42 was seen to make a gesture towards a Blackburn Rovers player which was perceived as racist and a complaint was made to police.

"Anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect is asked to contact PC Chris Hilton on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
