Sky Sports understands Brighton rejected interest from several Championship clubs for Craig Mackail-Smith before letting him return to Peterborough.

Mackail-Smith re-joined former club Peterborough on loan on Thursday on a one-month deal after finding himself pushed down the pecking order at Brighton following the recent arrival of Darren Bent from Aston Villa.

The 30-year-old enjoyed a successful four-year spell at Peterborough before making the move to Brighton in 2011, scoring 99 goals for the Posh.

Several Championship clubs are thought to have made enquiries to sign Mackail-Smith earlier this week after learning that he might be available on loan.

The likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall and Charlton are all thought to have expressed an interest in Mackail-Smith, but Brighton rejected their overtures as they did not want the striker to join one of their Championship rivals.

Mackail-Smith's signing is a major boost for Peterborough and he will again link up with former strike partner Aaron McLean at London Road following his recent arrival from Bradford.
