Bolton have been rocked by the news that midfielder Mark Davies faces four months out of action due to another knee injury.
Davies missed nine months last year with anterior cruciate ligament damage and has now been told he requires surgery on the same knee.
The 26-year-old has featured in 11 games this season for the Trotters and scored once.
“It’s a hammer blow for us,” said manager Neil Lennon. “We don’t know the rhyme or reason for it, he came in and looked brilliant in training on Monday.
“On Tuesday his knee had swollen a little bit but the next day he felt he could carry on.
“We took him for a precautionary scan and then for a second opinion but the result was the same, he needs surgery. It’s a big blow for the player first and foremost and we don’t understand why this complication has occurred.”
