Reading midfielder Hope Akpan faces three months on the sidelines after dislocating his shoulder on international duty with Nigeria.
Akpan came off early in the second half of Saturday's game against Congo, and having seen a consultant back in Berkshire he will undergo surgery next week.
The 23-year-old, who was making his second appearance for Nigeria, now looks set to miss the African Cup of Nations in January.
However, there is better news for Royals boss Nigel Adkins with the return to fitness of Garath McCleary.
The winger has yet to make an appearance so far this season following a summer back operation but Adkins has confirmed he will be in the squad for Friday's trip to Cardiff.
